I lost my father to cancer and pneumonia on January 25th, 2021. He had esophageal cancer near the end of 2018, went through chemo in 2019 and had a surgery done to remove the cancer. He was cancer free pretty much all of 2020, but when having stomach issues in January, it was found the cancer returned and spread insanely quick. He was in a lot of pain and was unable to move around very much, which led to him developing pneumonia. He told my brother and I for the first time he was in pain a week before he died, which was the first time I've ever heard him actually complain about the way he felt.
The morning of the 25th, my step mother called my brother, and my brother peeked his head through my door while I was working and said that we need to get to the hospital. Because of COVID, the hospitals weren't allowing visitors unless it was for end of life circumstances, so I had a feeling he was going to pass away. My brother and I arrived at the hospital around 10AM and got to speak with my dad while he was still conscious. I got to tell him I love him and that my brother and I would be just fine. I stayed with him and he fell asleep while I was holding his hand. He eventually stopped breathing, so we knew he had passed away.
Even if cancer hadn't directly caused his death, it still had a major hand in it. So I just want to do whatever I can to help others and make it so no one has to go through such a terrible experience.
